Fish Farming

FISH IS A GREAT SOURCE PROTEIN, OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS AND OTHER NUTRIENTS THAT PROMOTE HEALTHY LIVING.

WORLDWIDE INDUSTRY: FISH FARMING

Fish farming is the practice of raising fish commercially in tanks, ponds or other enclosures usually for the purpose of producing food. The most important fish species used in fish farming are carp, catfish, salmon and tilapia. As the overall population rises, the demand and price of fish and fish related products are also increasing rapidly.

In fact, countries with coastal areas are very suitable for this business. China provides 62.5% of the world’s farmed fish (annual production 51.3 million metric tons).

Normally the farming of fishes can be taken up in large tanks that are in ground or elevated. One species can be stocked in one tank. However, two or three species can be kept in the same tank if compatible. Ground water from dug wells is being used to rear fish.

FEEDING FRENZY

Feeding is the most important part of fish farming. Young fish are fed mainly with small brine shrimp, Mosquito larvae and Blood worms. Some farms use artificial or prepared feed. The amount and type of food to be given depends on the size and species of the fish.

Feeding is to be done generally twice in a day or according to the requirement. High quality and nutritious food is the first and foremost requirement. High quality food ensures maximum production and also helps to keep the fish healthy. Farms do provide fish supplementary fish feed along with natural food.

Supplementary fish feed is easily available in the market for specific fish species or you can prepare it at home. Not only this, always try to provide your fish fresh and nutritious foods.

BEST PRODUCT

It will be better if you can change water from the pond occasionally.

If it is not possible, you can use some chemicals according to the suggestion of an expert. You will have to monitor the health of your fish on a regular basis. Do all your necessary farm tasks timely. Keep the pond environment clean and suitable for proper growth. Test the water and soil quality of your pond on a regular basis. Always stock some necessary drugs on your farm.

Fish Farming

Prevent all types of predators, including frogs, snakes etc. Prevent pollution and overcrowding to nurture the best produce. After a certain period, the fish become suitable for harvesting. Although this time depends on the fish species. Start harvesting, when major numbers of fish reach marketing age. You can use a net for harvesting fish or by removing water from the pond. Try to harvest during morning or afternoon, when the temperature is low. After harvesting, ice so the fish are fresh and ready to be sent to the market.

As a result, to large scale farming shrimp, salmon, trout and tuna are the most favored seafood products in the US. The industry expansion allows products to always be available. Here consumers have a wide choice of locally sourced products as well as seafood imported from around the world.

Environmental Aquaculture

Aquaculture is the cultivation of aquatic animals for food. Effluent or wastewater is regulated under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) as part of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972. The permit regulates water quality during the fish farming operation and the steps that need to happen to avoid harming wetlands, streams and other water sources.

We had the pleasure of helping one of our fish farming clients with their wastewater permit renewal. They raise beautiful Trout and use raceways and ponds at their facilities. Latitudes performs wastewater permitting for several types of industry including fish farms/aquaculture. Project tasks include:

1. Reviewing past regulatory filings, current aquaculture operations, and analytical data from the discharge outfalls

2. Preparing the technical application package, including worksheets, plot plans, topo maps, and process flow diagrams

3. Finalizing and submitting the complete application package to the lead state agency

4. Monitoring the state’s review process, and respond to any comments, until the application is declared administratively complete, and the technical review period is over

Latitudes Environmental is a Houston firm, who supports aquaculture, urban agriculture, sustainability and locally-grown foods.
